The Start of Smart Clothing
It is impossible to ignore the impact that wearable technology is making in our day-to-day lives. Wearable technology is everywhere. It is hard to not fall into the bandwagon and indulge in a Fitbit or a smart watch.
We live in an era where we like to stay connected and keep track of where we are at all times and this new technology offers us just that. The smart watch allows us to be in sync to our phones at all times, there’s no way you’ll miss a phone call or a text message.
The Fitbit tracks your sleep and the amount of steps you take throughout the day, amongst others things. That little gadget will let us know if we took 10,000 steps a day which will help justify why we didn’t make it to the gym that day. These gadgets are fascinating and changing our life and how we go about our lifestyles.
This wearable technology is especially of interest to the fashion industry that is always trying to offer the most extravagant and unique pieces at fashion week. Fitbit made its debut with Tory Burch, which proved very successful! The product sold out within the first few hours it was announced. Fitbit also recently teamed up Public School, an urban street style brand, that showcased gender neutral Fitbits to the market.
Topshop, a popular British clothing company, is looking into investing in wearable technology integrated into their clothing. They have launched, Top Pitch a startup that is looking to team up with entrepreneurs to work on wearable technology that people will want to wear. The main aim of Top Pitch is “to discover and co-develop prototypes that move wearable technology further into the fashion arena while retaining functionality that delivers for the user” according to Fashion and Mash.
The biggest challenge is finding a clothing article that will sell to the mass. We will have to wait and see if this startup is successful with it’s very ambitious plan.
